"Two and a half minutes to midnight"

For the last two years, the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock stayed at three minutes before the hour, the closest it’s been to midnight since the 1980s. During another casual in-class discussion in Mr.Masincupp’s class, I learned about the dangers our world is facing and how in reality, how close we are to the end of the world. With all of the recent events that have led to the scientific-based clock leaning towards midnight, the probability of global catastrophe is extremely high and need to be taken seriously. With events such as the election of Trump, the affairs with North Korea, and all of the natural disasters happening so rapidly, the sad truth is without change, the world is near its final goodbyes.
The Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents the likelihood of a man-made catastrophe, and as the hypothetical handle reaches closer to midnight, the closer we are to total global domination. The clock is at the closest it’s ever been to striking midnight in several years, and it spreads awareness to the very clear problems our nation has been facing. The following events are the main contributions to the moving clock in 2017: the rise of nationalism, U.S.’s President Donald Trump’s comments over nuclear weapons, the arms race between U.S. and Russia, the disbelief from many Americans over climate change by the Trump Administration, etc.
In my opinion, the fact that events like these are happening in the world and how people have little belief in their reality, proves how because of how corrupt our society has become there is little hope for change in the course of how our world progresses. In order to find change in the world, we need to first learn to accept how corrupt our society is and make bigger changes for the better. The fight for change will end if we accept reality and continue to be ignorant to the world around us.

  1. Wow. I have never heard of the doomsday clock before. Thank you for introducing it to me. It is entirely terrifying that something like this exists, like a thing that quantifies all the crappy things that we are doing to our world. I watched an episode of the new Bill Nye Netflix show and he talks a lot about global warming and the political climate, really scary stuff.

Advertisement Visuals and our Brain

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLwMqcs_NZA&app=desktop Target, is a well-known brand that we all know and love, including myself. But even Target follows the same marketing techniques that all companies share, convincing us to buy their product by over embellishing what the product is and giving us a sense of community and visuals we can relate to that make us want to invest in them. Target's approach to this common technique though, is one that I find very interesting and unique. A trend you can find in Target's advertisements is the use of pretty and colorful visuals that give off an aesthetic-like vibe. In the Back to School ad (link above) Target color coordinates certain parts of their ad using the technique known as "Gestalt:Subliminal Persuasion"  by using oddness and intensity of color to exaggerate the product and put our minds into a surreal type of world. The angle of the camera which constantly revolves around only showing the key components of the ...

Reflection

Blog after blog, week after week, I am forced to finally sit down and reflect on all of my decisions in the media and what media means to me. As we are all very aware of, media is around us everywhere, are more than I'd like to admit it has in some ways taken over my life completely. We are all under the influence over what society brings us, and media is the most common form of getting these messages across to us. Personally, I consume media several hours a day. Sometimes during school, sometimes in the middle of schoolwork, and definitely as soon as I get home or right before I'm about to go to sleep. I think nothing of it, but I do think it is messing with my brain in both positive and negative ways. When consuming media, I feel updated and knowledgable about the world around me, and connected to society and people I know in real life. But, sometimes when I'm on media, I feel pressured to fulfill a certain standard, to be someone I'm not in order to be accepted by ot...

Are advertisements creating toxic beauty standards?

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/features/advertisings-toxic-effect-on-eating-and-body-image/            When watching countless amounts of commercials at home, online, and even in zero period watching my classmates’ presentations, I noticed a common trend within advertisements that I found strange and demeaning of the companies who made the commercials. Several of the commercials we watched starred thin, tan, physically attractive people, many of which who are happy, in a relationship, etc. showing a common trend of the companies idea of the people who they are trying to market to. But, obviously, not every viewer/consumer, is tan, thin, and physically attractive, so what kind of message does this give to people who constantly have to live seeing several of these advertisement...
