Are advertisements creating toxic beauty standards?

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/features/advertisings-toxic-effect-on-eating-and-body-image/            When watching countless amounts of commercials at home, online, and even in zero period watching my classmates’ presentations, I noticed a common trend within advertisements that I found strange and demeaning of the companies who made the commercials. Several of the commercials we watched starred thin, tan, physically attractive people, many of which who are happy, in a relationship, etc. showing a common trend of the companies idea of the people who they are trying to market to. But, obviously, not every viewer/consumer, is tan, thin, and physically attractive, so what kind of message does this give to people who constantly have to live seeing several of these advertisement...

Net Neutrality: The Controversy

When we go online, we have expectations that fall into a routine, that we can instantly be connected whenever we want, have free service and have access to have as much information we desire across the web. That is the concept of Net Neutrality, free internet, wherever, whenever. Net Neutrality has been the way the internet has functioned forever, and just in 2015 activists pressed the F.C.C. (Federal Communications Commission) to adopt Net Neutrality rules and keep them and the internet alive. But, in recent news, on Dec.14, 2017 the F.C.C.’s Republican party ignored society’s pleas and approved Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to remove Net Neutrality protections. What does a world without Net Neutrality look like? Imagine logging onto your favorite apps, refreshing the page and then it asks you to start paying monthly fees. Imagine simply making Google searches, but you are soon blocked until yo...

Advertisement Visuals and our Brain

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLwMqcs_NZA&app=desktop Target, is a well-known brand that we all know and love, including myself. But even Target follows the same marketing techniques that all companies share, convincing us to buy their product by over embellishing what the product is and giving us a sense of community and visuals we can relate to that make us want to invest in them. Target's approach to this common technique though, is one that I find very interesting and unique. A trend you can find in Target's advertisements is the use of pretty and colorful visuals that give off an aesthetic-like vibe. In the Back to School ad (link above) Target color coordinates certain parts of their ad using the technique known as "Gestalt:Subliminal Persuasion"  by using oddness and intensity of color to exaggerate the product and put our minds into a surreal type of world. The angle of the camera which constantly revolves around only showing the key components of the ...

Advertisement and our Psychology

When looking at the photo above, without thinking, how many of the logos can you instantly recognize? Throughout our lives, advertisements have been around us on a daily basis. But, as we evolve as people, so do advertisements and the media surrounding us. Advertisements have never been only about the promotion of products or brand names, but moreover creating a connection with the consumer themselves. Advertisements have been used productively to influence our minds and control our decision-making, in a way by making us believe that their company is not just a product, but a brand-a connection we can find no where else. Especially for those living in the era of Generation Z, there has been little to no amount of time where technology, media and new forms of advertisements have been on the uprise, quickly enveloping us into the state of mind that makes us believe that ads and companies are essential to living life, when they are not. Many fail to realize the influence on ads in our c...

Two Perspectives: NFL Protesting

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/11/28/trump-america-is-fed-up-with-nfl-national-anthem-protests.html https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/24/sports/nfl-trump-anthem-protests.html On the topic of NFL protests in recent media, Fox News and NY times have created articles on the same topic addressing Trump blasting NFL players for taking the knee during the national anthem.  NY Times' foundation of their article was about how teammates/players still stand strong and united despite insults from U.S. President Donald Trump. According to NY Times, " The protests were part of a massive show of solidarity in the face of harsh criticism by President Trump, who had called for protesting players to be fired." On Trump's Twitter account, on September 24th 2017, he tweets, " Sports fans should never condone players that do not stand proud for their National Anthem or their Country. NFL should change policy!" The response from NFL players, however, was ultimately send...
