Reflection

Blog after blog, week after week, I am forced to finally sit down and reflect on all of my decisions in the media and what media means to me. As we are all very aware of, media is around us everywhere, are more than I'd like to admit it has in some ways taken over my life completely. We are all under the influence over what society brings us, and media is the most common form of getting these messages across to us. Personally, I consume media several hours a day. Sometimes during school, sometimes in the middle of schoolwork, and definitely as soon as I get home or right before I'm about to go to sleep. I think nothing of it, but I do think it is messing with my brain in both positive and negative ways. When consuming media, I feel updated and knowledgable about the world around me, and connected to society and people I know in real life. But, sometimes when I'm on media, I feel pressured to fulfill a certain standard, to be someone I'm not in order to be accepted by ot...

Toxic Trends

Media is always influencing us, no matter what we do. We can't avoid its consequences, no matter the circumstance or how pointless it seems, and recent trends or "memes" are here to prove that. Tide pods are known as just a form of laundry detergent, but now to the media they are known as "a forbidden snack." As pointless and ignorant as it sounds, nowadays people will do anything they see on social media, so we need to be more cautious about what we consider a trend and "joke"about on the web. Obviously, anyone in their right mind would not consume tide pods, but with the media having so many members of the youth, anyone would do anything for attention/views. These trends of "forbidden snacks" involve inanimate objects being desired to be eaten by people simply because of their look, and tide pods is the most well-known of this trend. Trends like these are simply supposed to be comedic, and personally I think they are funny as well, but t...

Our biggest influencers in the media

With mass followings of millions, the world has access to every part of these multi-million dollar rappers lifestyles and every-day activities, especially from those of our youth. In the past, there were several people the children of their time could look up to, people with admirable and inspirational lifestyles and story to inspire and motivate the youth to become who they wanted to be and pursue their goals. But, times have changed-and not for the better. Rappers such as Lil Pump, XXXTentacion, 21 Savage and many, many more, have overtaken our old role models in the media and have became the newest "influencers" our youth have to look up to.  You'd expect any average singer, or rapper, to have creative, meaningful lyrics, and at least some vocal capability, but the harsh reality of rappers nowadays is that none of this is apparent. Lyrics from a shocking majority of modern day rappers glamorize the use of drugs, and post several photos on social media of them ab...

"Two and a half minutes to midnight"

For the last two years, the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock stayed at three minutes before the hour, the closest it’s been to midnight since the 1980s. During another casual in-class discussion in Mr.Masincupp’s class, I learned about the dangers our world is facing and how in reality, how close we are to the end of the world. With all of the recent events that have led to the scientific-based clock leaning towards midnight, the probability of global catastrophe is extremely high and need to be taken seriously. With events such as the election of Trump, the affairs with North Korea, and all of the natural disasters happening so rapidly, the sad truth is without change, the world is near its final goodbyes.             The Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents the likelihood of a man-made catastrophe, and as the hypothetical handle reaches closer to midnight, the closer we are to total global domination. The clock is at...

"Miss" Represented in Society

“You can’t be what you can’t see,” is the saying the film Miss Representation constantly used to express the fact that there are little to no positive women role models in society, and that in order to be a powerful, and impactful leaders in society as women, we need to create the image of them ourselves. The movie uses successful women in politics and the media who created a positive image for themselves to talk about the influence on young women in the media and what needs to be done in order for change. Role models such as Nancy Pelosi, Lisa Ling, Marissa Mayer, Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, etc. Throughout generations and generations of media produced, it remains portraying men as the protagonists in an overwhelming percentage of movies. It gives the message to viewers that women are less in society and can’t achieve the same destinies that men can. With there being so many outlets of media accessible at such a ...

Are advertisements creating toxic beauty standards?

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/features/advertisings-toxic-effect-on-eating-and-body-image/            When watching countless amounts of commercials at home, online, and even in zero period watching my classmates’ presentations, I noticed a common trend within advertisements that I found strange and demeaning of the companies who made the commercials. Several of the commercials we watched starred thin, tan, physically attractive people, many of which who are happy, in a relationship, etc. showing a common trend of the companies idea of the people who they are trying to market to. But, obviously, not every viewer/consumer, is tan, thin, and physically attractive, so what kind of message does this give to people who constantly have to live seeing several of these advertisement...

Net Neutrality: The Controversy

When we go online, we have expectations that fall into a routine, that we can instantly be connected whenever we want, have free service and have access to have as much information we desire across the web. That is the concept of Net Neutrality, free internet, wherever, whenever. Net Neutrality has been the way the internet has functioned forever, and just in 2015 activists pressed the F.C.C. (Federal Communications Commission) to adopt Net Neutrality rules and keep them and the internet alive. But, in recent news, on Dec.14, 2017 the F.C.C.’s Republican party ignored society’s pleas and approved Chairman Ajit Pai’s plan to remove Net Neutrality protections. What does a world without Net Neutrality look like? Imagine logging onto your favorite apps, refreshing the page and then it asks you to start paying monthly fees. Imagine simply making Google searches, but you are soon blocked until yo...
